The Guardian of the Master Emerald before Knuckles, was his own father, Locke. Locke is known to be stern, serious and kind of aggressive. He became partners with Lara-Le simply to have a perfect child to be the next guardian. As soon as Knuckles hatched from his egg, Locke did not hesitate to teach his son the ways of the guardian, forcing him beyond being exhausted, much to Lara-Le's hatred. This would go so far that Lara-Le divorced Locke, and took Knuckles away from him. But Locke warned her that it was to late, and sure enough, even though Lara-Le wanted to give Knuckles a normal life, Locke's lessons were already stuck in his mind. While Knuckles tried his best to be there for his mother, his fathers words would mold Knuckles into the perfect guardian he is today.
