The Ancient Chao were gifts from Chaos to the Mobians as a thanks for the caretaking and to help the Mobians as somekind of assistants. Life was peaceful between the Mobians and the Chao. That was until Pachacamac and his army attacked the Master Emerald and the banishment of the attacking echidnas. As that event split the Chao into 2 beings, their rocky hearts went with the banished echidna, while their watery bodies changed shaped into the modern Chao who stayed behind, as the shattered planet became modern day Mobius. Even after the modern Chao and rocky hearts met each other again, it was impossible for them to become one again.
