Cortez's sword isn't just a sturdy weapon able to handle any basic sword strike; it's also considered sacred. As it's passed down from wielder to wielder, there are very specific rules for its handling. Most importantly is how it must be maintained. It avoids being dulled thanks to magic properties, but as it gets tarnished from the dust, dirt, and blood of its enemies, it risks losing power as it feels uncared for. Therefore it must be cleaned, polished, and protected.

When it comes time to clean, there is some preparation involved. The wielder must present themselves to the sword, removing all articles of clothing and setting them aside. The blade must be held in the lap, in contact with its holder. It's dangerous, especially when Cortez is sporting a boner, but such an exercise builds trust between the blade and holder. Cortez takes on the task with diligence and total concentration, eyes watching both the position of the blade and the luster, ensuring he's wiping every spot to leave his blade as clean as it was when first given to him.
